The “Broken Barbeque” Mentality: What Dan Repacholi Got Right About Men’s Health

At a recent Men’s Health Week event, Dan Repacholi MP (Australia’s Special Envoy for Men’s Health) called out a classic Aussie trait.

He noted that most blokes will spend six hours trying to fix a broken barbeque. They will watch three YouTube videos, make two trips to Bunnings, and still refuse to admit it is stuffed. But when it comes to making a doctor’s appointment for themselves? Suddenly, they are “too busy”.

Data shows that 60 per cent of Australian men wait more than a week to see a doctor when they have symptoms. Worse, one in three men waits more than a month.

If your car made a strange noise, you would not ignore it for a month. Yet, many men in North Lakes do exactly that with their own bodies.

The Danger of “Toughing It Out”

This Men’s Mental Health Month, we want to challenge the old rulebook. Most men grow up learning to just “tough it out”.

But toughing it out does not fix an overloaded nervous system. It does not fix chronic anxiety, and it certainly does not fix severe burnout. It just turns small, manageable problems into massive health crises.

When you bottle up stress, your body pays the price. At SunMed Skin & Medical Clinic, we see this survival mode manifest physically. Men present with sudden spikes in blood pressure, chronic gut issues, unexplainable fatigue, or severe flare-ups of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Your body pulls the emergency handbrake because you refuse to pull over.

Partners in Care: You Do Not Drive Alone

The national theme for men’s health focuses on a powerful concept: Partners in Care.

None of us gets through life entirely on our own. You rely on your mates, your partner, and your family. But your local GP is a vital part of that pit crew, too.

Seeking help is not a confession of weakness. It is a strategic move. Think of a health check as standard preventative maintenance to keep the engine running smoothly.

When you book a private consultation at SunMed, we handle it practically:

  1. The Physical Audit: We check your vital signs, test your blood, and run complete skin checks to assess the physical toll of stress.
  2. The Mindset Check: We talk openly about sleep patterns, work habits, and stress levels.
  3. The Roadmap: We build a practical plan to lower your stress or connect you with dedicated psychological support.

Take the Hint

As Dan Repacholi said to a room full of blokes: “Getting checked isn’t a sign something’s wrong. It’s one of the smartest things you can do.”

Do not wait for a physical breakdown to justify a trip to the doctor. Your family, your mates, and your community need you functioning at your best.

Take the hint. Stop ignoring the warning lights on your dashboard.
